Choosing the Right Report

Two Reports. One Clear Picture.

Most cases call for one report or another — sometimes both. Here's what each one delivers, and why it matters.

Policy Limit Analysis

Know Before You File

Pre-Suit Policy Limit Disclosure by State

In most states an insurer has no duty to reveal liability limits until a lawsuit is filed and formal discovery opens. That single fact pushes attorneys to file suit just to learn what a case is worth — a major driver of crowded dockets. Hover or tap a state to see its rule; tap again to pin it.

High Level Analysis — not a substitute

In non-disclosure states a Coastal report is most useful for sizing a case before you file. But be clear on what it is: a data-driven analysis of likely coverage, not the carrier's real, confirmed policy limits. Those are only established through formal discovery or the insurer's sworn disclosure. Use our reports as a pre-lit analysis tool, never as proof of actual coverage.

What this showsEach state's pre-suitduty to disclose liability limits on a third-party claimant's request. That is a different question from post-suit discovery, where limits are reachable almost everywhere once a case is filed.
SourceThe Matthiesen, Wickert & Lehrer 50-state survey (last updated 2026), cross-checked against the cited statutes and cases. We re-classified from primary law; we did not independently audit every jurisdiction.
LimitsThis is general orientation, not legal advice, and not a substitute for a carrier's sworn disclosure or your own research. Statutes and case law change — confirm current authority before you rely on any state's status in a live matter.
